European Continental pointing breeds and mastiffs are believed to be its ancestors. Germany was once possessive of this breed but relented in the 1950's and released a pair to the US. The Weimaraner dog breed gained popularity with the help of US President Dwight D. Eisenhower who owned one and artist William Wegman who used Weimaraners as subjects.
